Happy New Year in February?

Koreans start putting up Christmas and New Year’s Day decorations as early as in late November and when they do, many companies and stores lump Christmas decorations with decorating for Chinese New Year’s. Most people do not take decorations down until the official Korean holiday season is completely over. When this occurs depends on where Chinese New Year’s Day falls on the calendar.
Unlike in Japan where Chinese New Year’s Day is not officially celebrated, in Korea, Seollal(Chinese New Year’s Day) is one of the two most important holidays of the year, next to Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) in the fall.
Therefore, in Korea there are two official holidays celebrating the New Year. Because a majority of Koreans visit their hometowns on Chinese New Year’s, which falls on Jan. 1 on the lunar calender, the Seollal holidays are longer and more family-oriented than the Western New Year’s Day. This year, Chinese New Year’s Day falls on Feb. 18 on the solar calendar.
So expect to see the decorations until the end of February.
